- Mediterranean sea, Italian territorial waters – April 2nd, 2011- A group of more than 100 migrants attempting to cross the part of the Mediterranean sea between Tunisia and Italy. The boat with migrants moved at the early hours of the same day from the port of the town of Zarziz in Tunisia, took around 24 hours to arrive in the Italian territorial waters and be rescued by the Italian coast guards. As a photographer, I have been embarked with this group of migrants, traveling with them after I took an agreement with the smuggler that managed this travel. The boat was overloaded and stopped three times due to engine problems, the boat was rescued after my phone call to the coast guard, alerting that we were in distress not far from the coasts of Lampedusa Island, my mobile has been out of service until we arrived close to the Italian coast. - Steccato di Cutro, Italy – February 28th 2023 – Vincenzo Luciano, a fisherman, tries to bring to shore the body of a man recovered from the waves. The man drowned following the sinking of a ship from Turkey carrying 200 migrants of different nationalities and which sank a few hundred meters from the beach of Steccato di Cutro in the night between 25 and 26 February. At the end of the search and rescue operations it will counts 94 people died in the shipwreck, of which 35 children. Mr. Vincenzo Luciano is a local fisherman who patrolled the beach since the first day the shipwreck happened, trying to locate the bodies of migrants who resurfaced from the water, trying to help in rescue operations. In the photo, Mr. Luciano has tied a rope to the corpse’s ankle to prevent the waves from dragging him away, given that he carried out the recovery of the body from the sea by himself and did not have the strength to bring it to shore completely. Only with the arrival of other rescuers was it possible to move the body and place it in the mortuary bag. Ph. Giulio Piscitelli/ De Volkskrant

- Libya, Sahara desert border with Sudan – May 18th, 2014 – Refugees of different nationalities running on a dune of the desert trying to reach the car on which they were traveling and that restarted the trip after a problem to the engine that caused a stop to their trip in the middle of the desert. The men in the picture were part of a group of more than 80 refugees coming from Sudan and directed to Libya; the group has been intercepted by a local Libyan militia that controls this part of the territory and the border. According to some of them, the group of refugees was traveling for about 2 days in desperate conditions; after the rescue, the refugees were escorted to the Oasis of Kufrah and then arrested and detained in the local prison for illegal immigrants. The southeastern border of Libya is one of the main crossing points for the thousands of refugees that entrust their lives to smugglers to travel to northern Africa. Ph.Giulio Piscitelli

- Qayyarah, Iraq, October 27th, 2016 – Civilians evacuated from the city of Mosul during the operation carried out by the Iraqi army against the so-called Islamic State, which declared the second largest city of Iraq the capital of the Caliphate since 2014. In the picture, an Iraqi family waiting at the checkpoint of the town of Qayyara to be transported to one of the several refugee camps for internally displaced persons. In the background, piles of smoke of burned oil of the pipelines present in the town, that the so-called Islamic State set on fire before to retreat from the area. According to the United Nations, armed conflicts remain the main causes for the forced displacement of civilians and therefore the creation of migratory flows. Ph.Giulio Piscitelli

- Italy, Bari – 19 December 2012 – Muslim migrant praying in a corridor of the CPR (Repatriation detention centres). CPRs are tools used throughout Europe following the adoption of a common migration policy of the European Union states required by the Schengen Agreement. CPRs are not legally prisons, but places of administrative detention for people without a residence permit. Theoretically, the person recognized as liable to expulsion from the country should spend a short period in these places before being repatriated by the government; in reality it often happens that after many months of detention the person is released with an expulsion document and nothing else, a situation which places the migrant in a more precarious condition than his previous arrest because he lacks legal status, is forced to leave the country and the impossibility of obtaining the document definitively. This migration policy creates the conditions for ghettoization and labor exploitation Ph. Giulio Piscitelli

- Caivano, Italy – June 28th 2019 – Mrs Marina Lupo helps Mr Jerry Boakye to eat in the clinic where Mr Boakye has been hospitalized since the day he was attacked and confined to a wheelchair. Mr. Jerry Henry Boakye, a 33-year-old man from Ghana, arrived in Italy in 2006. In July 2017, while returning home after a working day was brutally beaten on a bus by an Italian man in the area of Castel Volturno, the violence began when Mr. Boakye reserved a place to sit to a pregnant black woman; the attacker started to yell against him with racists words and at the stop of the bus he gave a kick in the back to Mr.Boakye continuing to punch him also after fall on the ground. Because of this violence, Jerry became a tetraplegic and has since been forced to live in a private clinic not being able to look after himself even for simple daily gestures. His attacker is now under house arrest, and the trial is ongoing. Jerry’s lawyer is certain of the attacker’s guilt, but he has doubts about the possibility that the trial ends with a judgment that may underline the racial matrix of what happened. In 2020, Mr Boakye died following his worsening psychological and physical condition, the trial against Jerry’s attacker ended in 2021 with a sentence of 2 years of home detention for general injuries.
